Passover Lamb

I've been doing some reading about Jesus' last week before His crucifixion and the Jewish Passover.  I discovered that 5 days before the Passover the priests would choose the Passover lamb that would be sacrificed for the sins of Israel for that year.  It would be chosen and then inspected for 5 days to make sure that it was spotless and had no defects whatsoever.

Jesus' first full day in Jerusalem, after His Palm Sunday entry, would have been that day, the day that the lamb was chosen.  The religious leaders didn't know it, but they were inspecting another Lamb that week.  Throughout that last week of His life, the priests and scribes grilled Him on His authority and teaching, examining Him, trying to trip Him up.  But no defects were found in Him.

Then, on Friday, Jesus was killed on a cross.  He hung there, we are told in the Gospels, from noon until 3pm when He announced, "It is finished!"  A phrase used in business at that time which meant that a debt had been paid in full.  Would you care to take a guess as to what time the Passover lamb would have been sacrificed at the Temple there in Jerusalem on that day?  Yep, 3pm sharp!  So, as the lamb in the Temple was being sacrificed for the people of Israel for that year, the ultimate Passover Lamb on the hill called Golgotha was being sacrificed for all people for all time, announcing the debt has been paid in full!

Pretty cool, huh?
