Timing is Everything!

Thoughts on Today’s Moravian Text – 9/22/14…

Timing-is-everything

1 Samuel 13:8-9

“Meanwhile, Saul stayed at Gilgal, and his men were trembling with fear. 8 Saul waited there seven days for Samuel, as Samuel had instructed him earlier, but Samuel still didn’t come. Saul realized that his troops were rapidly slipping away. 9 So he demanded, “Bring me the burnt offering and the peace offerings!” And Saul sacrificed the burnt offering himself.”

This was the beginning of the end for King Saul.  Saul and his men were preparing for a battle against the mighty Philistine army.  The Prophet Samuel had prophesied and told Saul to wait for seven days for him to get there and do the burnt offering to ask God’s blessing for the battle.  But when Samuel was later than Saul was expecting, Saul panicked  and did the offering himself.

When Samuel arrived and realized what Saul had done he pressed Saul for the reason.  Saul said that the people were scattering because Samuel, the mouth piece of God, didn’t show up when they expected him to.  Samuel replied to him:

1 Samuel 13:13-14

13 “How foolish!” Samuel exclaimed. “You have not kept the command the Lord your God gave you. Had you kept it, the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. 14 But now your kingdom must end, for the Lord has sought out a man after his own heart.

It wasn’t a great moral failure or major corruption that brought about his demise.  What got Saul in the end was good old fashioned doubt brought on by a timing issue.

“I know God said He’d show up but what if He doesn’t?”

It almost sounds silly to say it out loud but all of us struggle with this from time to time and we all, like Saul, can be tempted to try and do things in our own strength and in our own time and make a mess out of things rather than waiting on God’s perfect timing.

My prayer for you and for me today is that we would be the men and women after God’s own heart, that we would keep the command of God, and that we would trust that He will keep His promises to us…even when His timing isn’t what we hoped it would be!
