First Gift of the Year

From today’s Moravian Texts…

Just for you gift_orange

28 “My Lord and my God!” Thomas exclaimed.
29 Then Jesus told him, “You believe because you have seen Me. Blessed are those who believe without seeing Me.”
30 The disciples saw Jesus do many other miraculous signs in addition to the ones recorded in this book. 31 But these are written so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in Him you will have life by the power of His Name.

As I read today’s text in John what caught my eye was this last section.

More specifically, that you and I are the recipients of a special shout out from Jesus in verse 29: “Blessed are those who believe without seeing Me.”  That’s you, my friend.  And it’s me.  We are the ones that Jesus is talking about here nearly 2,000 years ago and He is taking note that we are especially blessed because we have believed without having seen with our eyes.  You’re in the Bible, that’s pretty cool.  (You could put that in your resume.)

John elaborates on the benefits of that blessing in verse 31.  He says: “that by believing in Him you will have life by the power of His Name.”   As we know, believing isn’t belief for beliefs sake.  Belief in Jesus isn’t just some sort of mental assent but an internal and external transformation that brings LIFE!  Life to us and to the people around us.  Life in the form of forgiveness, and restored relationships, and peace in the midst turmoil, and so much more.

As we enter into this wonderful Christmas season let’s consider this reminder our first gift of the year, from our Master Himself.  The gift of a blessing 2 millennia ago that reverberates through the centuries and still brings us life today.
