From today’s Moravian Texts, 1/8/15…
God raised Him from the dead on the third day and caused Him to be seen. 41 He was not seen by all the people, but by witnesses whom God had already chosen—by us who ate and drank with Him after He rose from the dead.42 He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that He is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead.
~ Acts 10:40-42
Peter here is talking about the death and resurrection of Jesus explains that, after Jesus had risen, only those who God had chosen saw Jesus. This could have led the “chosen” disciples to get full of themselves with a lot of high fives and “atta boys”, but Peter goes on to say that the “chosen club” came with stipulations. Those who were chosen were “commanded to preach to the people” (those who hadn’t seen Jesus) telling them the amazing truth about Who Jesus really was.
Being chosen wasn’t just a privilege, it was a responsibility.
Those of us in the Church have been chosen to see the risen Jesus. Let’s rejoice in the privilege of that, but let’s also remember the responsibility that comes with it.
The Father didn’t choose us because He loved us more than the others. He chose us because He trusted us that we would carry the message that we had been given, that Jesus is the Messiah and the appointed Judge, to those who haven’t seen Him yet.
Let’s take our privilege and responsibility seriously and bring this wonderful, life-giving message to those who so desperately need it!
