Five Practices - Graphic

Matthew 6:16-18 NLT
16 “And when you fast, don’t make it obvious, as the hypocrites do, for they try to look miserable and disheveled so people will admire them for their fasting. I tell you the truth, that is the only reward they will ever get. 17 But when you fast, comb your hair and wash your face. 18 Then no one will notice that you are fasting, except your Father, who knows what you do in private. And your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.

BIBLICAL REASONS FOR FASTING

Luke 18:12 NLT
12 ‘I fast twice a week, and I give you a tenth of my income.’

Esther 4:16 NLT
16 “Go and gather together all the Jews of Susa and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. My maids and I will do the same.

Daniel 10:1-3 NLT
10 In the third year of the reign of King Cyrus of Persia, Daniel (also known as Belteshazzar) had another vision. He understood that the vision concerned events certain to happen in the future—times of war and great hardship.

2 When this vision came to me, I, Daniel, had been in mourning for three whole weeks. 3 All that time I had eaten no rich food. No meat or wine crossed my lips, and I used no fragrant lotions until those three weeks had passed.

Daniel 10:12-14 NLT
12 Then he said, “Don’t be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day you began to pray for understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your request has been heard in heaven. I have come in answer to your prayer. 13 But for twenty-one days the spirit prince of the kingdom of Persia blocked my way. Then Michael, one of the archangels, came to help me, and I left him there with the spirit prince of the kingdom of Persia. 14 Now I am here to explain what will happen to your people in the future, for this vision concerns a time yet to come.”

Colossians 3:2-3 NIV
2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.

Mark 9:21-25 The Passion Translation
21 Jesus turned to the father and asked, “How long has your son been tormented like this?”

“Since childhood,” he replied. 22 “It tries over and over to kill him by throwing him into fire or water. But please, if You’re able to do something, anything—have compassion on us and help us!”

23 Jesus said to him, “What do you mean ‘if’? If you are able to believe, all things are possible to the believer.”

24 When he heard this, the boy’s father cried out with tears, saying, “I do believe, Lord; help my little faith!”

25 Now when Jesus saw that the crowd was quickly growing larger, He commanded the demon, saying, “Deaf and mute spirit, I command you to come out of him and never enter him again!”

Matthew 9:14-15 NLT
14 One day the disciples of John the Baptist came to Jesus and asked Him, “Why don’t Your disciples fast like we do and the Pharisees do?”

15 Jesus replied, “Do wedding guests mourn while celebrating with the groom? Of course not. But someday the groom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.
