Five Practices - Graphic

Brother Lawrence – Talking with God
“Talking with God is the most holy, the most universal, and the most necessary practice in the spiritual life. We can speak humbly and lovingly to Him at all times, wherever we are. There are no rules or procedures to follow. Just talk to Him honestly and believe that He hears you.”

Luke 11:1 NIV
One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When He finished, one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”

Matthew 6:9-13 NIV
9 “This, then, is how you should pray:

“‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be Your name,
10 Your kingdom come,
Your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.’

6:9 ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name.

Brother Lawrence – Worship
What is more pleasant than to praise our great God? What is more important than to continually occupy ourselves with worshiping and loving Him for His infinite goodness and perfection?

What higher ambition can we choose than this: to become true worshipers of Him in this world, as we hope to be perfect worshipers in the world to come?

6 v.10 “Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”

Brother Lawrence – God’s Will
“Do you truly believe that God’s will is your highest good? Then trust Him. Seek Him. Realize your constant need for Him. Feed your hunger for Him.”

Luke 4:16-21 NIV
16 He went to Nazareth, where He had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day He went into the synagogue, as was His custom. He stood up to read, 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. Unrolling it, He found the place where it is written:

18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on Me,
because He has anointed Me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent Me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

20 Then He rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on Him. 21 He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”

6:11 “Give us today our daily bread.”

Brother Lawrence – Provision
In a sense, we live as if it is only God and us in the world. We are always together and converse naturally. We gain a holy freedom in Him. We ask whatever we need, and He pours unexpected graces on us. Our trust deepens. We rejoice with Him in a thousand daily ways.

6:12 “And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.”

Brother Lawrence – Forgiveness
Don’t be discouraged when you forget to turn to God. Ask His forgiveness and His help. He is glad to give them both.

6:13a “And lead us not into temptation”

Brother Lawrence – Temptation
“When (temptation) comes, go immediately to God. Don’t toy with the desire. Remain in God’s presence in complete trust, humbly worshiping Him. Tell Him your weaknesses and struggles, and lovingly ask for His help.”

Watch to see where God is working and join Him
~ “Experiencing God”, Henry and Richard Blackaby

6:13b “but deliver us from the evil one.”

Brother Lawrence – Protection
“You need not cry very loud: He is nearer to us than we think.”

2 Thessalonians 3:3 NIV
But the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one.

“Father, I know You are my caring, loving heavenly Father. You rule over all and will watch over me today from Your throne in heaven. Let Your glory be seen in all I do today. I want your rule and will to be done in all of my thoughts and actions today. Please provide for all my needs today – spiritual, physical, and financial…”
